Not another leaver!
I don’t like Monday’s or Friday’s.
Did you know that more resignation letters are left on the boss’s desk on a Monday and aFriday than most other days.
You get back from lunch and bingo, there it is, propped up against your monitor in anenvelope marked, ‘Private and Confidential’ – Immediately, you have that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach.
You open the envelope quickly and surprise surprise, the last member of your team you thought would resign, has done just that.
You feel outraged, you did not see it coming, why didn’t he/she warn me? And you thought your best employee would be with you forever. It seemed only yesterday when you had that last review, you quickly check the files and no, it was two years ago!
Your team know straight away that something is wrong, you act cool, “well it was probably time he/she moved on, we need some fresh blood around here anyway”.
Then reality hits home, it will probably take two to three months to recruit and then the new starter will need training and integrating.
Can you foresee a resignation?
Before you get carried away. Stop just there. Was it foreseeable, probably yes, could more have been done, yes again.
Appraisals – an annual time-consuming task, or is it?
One to one’s or appraisals can be a hit or a miss, sometimes, a regular informal quick 10-minute chat may do just as well.
Nobody likes negative feedback and that is probably why it is left and left until thatresignation letter arrives on your desk – A quick catch up to emphasise the positive’s and not just giving negative feedback can be excellent for focussing everyone’s attention and of course, it could give you a chance for an insight into your employee’s thoughts.
Does that mean you never give negative feedback?
No, it does not, but it needs to be about the job and not a character assassination.
If you really want to be able to direct your thoughts to motivate and not switch off your employee, then give us a call and let’s talk – One motivated employee is worth at least two demotivated employees’.
